Shuji Ogino, MD, PhD, MS, is American Cancer Society Professor; the founding Chief of Molecular Pathological Epidemiology (MPE) Program, Brigham and Women's Hospital; Professor of Pathology, Harvard Medical School; Professor (Epidemiology), Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; Associate Member of Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dr. Ogino is regarded as the founding father of the transdisciplinary field of molecular pathological epidemiology (MPE). He conducts multifaceted MPE studies using the prospective cohort incident-tumor biobank method (PCIBM; Ogino et al. Lancet Reg Health Am 2026), having discovered the etiological interplay of long-term exposures, molecular pathologies, microbiota, and tumor microenvironment/immunity. The uniqueness of his PCIBM-based research is well proven. Each of 30 studies by his group [starting with analyses that found the link between long-term aspirin use and decreased incidence of PTGS2-positive colorectal cancer (CRC) (Chan et al. New Engl J Med 2007) and the link between long-term alcohol intake and increased incidence of LINE-1 hypomethylated CRC (Schernhammer et al. Gut 2010)] remains the latest and only study even after up to 19 years of publications, despite heightened interest in our results. This is unprecedented in any study published in NEJM. Recently, he has applied the PCIBM to analyses for elucidating enigmatic etiologies of early-onset cancers (Akimoto et al. Nat Rev Clin Oncol 2021; Ugai et al. Nat Rev Clin Oncol 2022; Ogino et al. Ann Oncol 2024; Hamada et al. Nature Health 2026). For his unique transdisciplinary scientific contribution, Dr. Ogino has received numerous awards and honors.
